The Gathering is a community meal program located in inner-city Milwaukee that provides 10 free hot meals each week at three locations, 51 weeks a year, closing for one week between Christmas and New Year’s, and on major holidays. All meals are cooked fresh on site. Volunteers assist in meal preparation, set up, serving and cleanup.
A compassionate group of volunteers from St. Anne’s serve lunch the first Saturday of every month at the “Our Next Generation Neighborhood Center” site (3421 W. Lisbon Ave) and invite 2 – 4 more helping hands to join them. Sign up on the kiosk in the church lobby to indicate your interest to join.
2020 SOTH served as a large group at this inner-city “hot meal program” once and served twice to assemble and distribute bagged lunches with 4-5 volunteers. Volunteers met the needs once at each of the sites – Our Next Generation Neighborhood Center (ONGNC), the new downtown site Running Rebels and the South Side site.
It is a great opportunity to volunteer your time as a family. The time commitment is from 9:45 am – 1:30 pm at the site. To carpool from Shepherd of the Hills, meet at the church at 9:00 am.
The Gathering began in 1982 under the direction of the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee and from the vision of Fr. Michael Stolpman, and is now an independent nonprofit organization. The mission of The Gathering is to provide meals and associated services or programs to those who would otherwise go hungry or without. They respect the dignity and values of every individual served and value their volunteers who allow them to serve the community.
