John 14:6-10 (NIV)

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

Many people think of God in abstract ways. They think God is a “force” that is “out there” moving the universe by the rules of karma by rewarding those who think positively and “pay-it-forward.” But Jesus reveals a God who is deeply personal and emotional. Jesus says, “Hey! Look at me! Don’t you realize that I have been showing you all along who God is?!” Maybe we don’t want a vulnerable God who lets us beat Him up and abuse Him. Maybe we don’t want a God who chooses the weak and forgotten things to bring about His glory (1 Cor. 1:27). Maybe we don’t want a God who gets angry when we hurt others. We just want a happy God who gives us nice things when we ask and lets us get on with our own life. But Jesus shows us that God will keep on pursuing us, even if it breaks his heart and costs him his life! That is good news!
