Daily Devotions – Who is coming to dinner?

Luke 14:12-14 (NIV)

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

At a fancy dinner with some prominent religious leaders, Jesus made this sharp statement about who we should invite to dinner. With these words, Jesus attacks our culture of “you help me, I help you”. In God’s kingdom, it is “God who has helped you, and you can’t repay God, so you are to help those who can’t repay you.” Pray for the grace to be more fully aware of how much we have received from God that we can never repay. Let that awareness of God’s mercy change your attitudes and actions.
