John 13:3-5 (ESV)

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Washing feet in a world of dirt roads without socks and shoes was a gross and lowly job. Usually people washed their own feet, but only lowly servants would wash the feet of other people. Yet this is the great “example” that Jesus gives us which was shown completely on the cross! Who can you serve today? Your children as you clean up after them? Your employees as you treat them with dignity, respect, and kindness? The person you buy your coffee or lunch from? Jesus loves “ordinary” and even lowly acts of service from His followers. Where can you live out an “ordinary” life of devotion more each day?
