Hebrews 6:13-20 (ESV)
The Certainty of God’s Promise
13 For when God made a promise to Abraham since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” 15 And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. 16 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. 17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

How does Abraham’s example help these people understand God’s promise?

Faithful Lord, I come to You on my knees this morning. I keep praying for resolutions to health issues, family issues, to bring peace and civility back to this country, to fill the church with Your Spirit. Lord, there are many people who are hurting, ill, and suffering.  Fear, anger, and unrest seem to have taken over and we need a solid resolution of this virus so we can stop this isolation that is causing damage to people and society. You promise that You are hearing my prayer. You promise that You will never leave me or forsake me. Abraham relied on Your promise to be true even though, from a human perspective, it was impossible. The reason for introducing Abraham’s example was to encourage us to persevere in the Christian life and that You give the highest possible assurance of Your purpose to bless Your people, by an oath. Still, Abraham waited 25 years to receive the fulfillment of Your promise. But You are a faithful God. I run to You for safety. Let Your promises greatly encourage me to take hold of the hope that is right in front of me. This hope is like a firm and steady anchor for my soul. My hope is not based on some vague optimism or wishful thinking. It is trust in the unbreakable promises of God. It is Your faithfulness that prompts me to cling to You. Help me to trust is in You, not in my efforts. Help me to be more patient. Encourage me to persevere in the Christian life as I am waiting to see Your answers to prayers and trusting in Your promises. Your Word is true and You keep all of Your promises. Amen
