Daily Devotions – The Armor of Your Light

Romans 13:8-14 (NIV)
Love Fulfills the Law
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

The Day Is Near
11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

What is the greatest example of love that you have ever experienced or observed?

Holy Father, thank you for the people who demonstrate Your love. They sacrifice their comfort, safety, and all that they have to serve You, the country, and the communities where they live. I thank you for police, firemen, first responders, those in the military, missionaries, and health care workers. There are countless pictures and stories from 9/11/2001 where first responders ran into danger to save as many people as they could, knowingly putting themselves in harm’s way for the love of their neighbor. Many didn’t return home. Lord as violence increases and illness continues to spread, we thank You for the law enforcement, and health care workers on the front lines. We raise up the military who have fought for our freedoms and continue to protect the country and the world. There are Christians in parts of the world who are tortured and killed for their faith but they continue to spread Your gospel truth so more can come to know You. The days are getting darker as they are filled with more evil. Freedom is being challenged, babies are killed, life is not respected, speech is being restricted, lives are being ruined and people are hurt and killed because their morals and values are different than someone else. Help me to not be complacent but to actively show love to my neighbor and to share Your gospel truth with my family, friends, and community. Help me to stand up for what You have done for me and for all mankind even if it means it is uncomfortable, or even potentially unsafe. Give me the armor of Your light so that I can illuminate the world with Your love.
