Hebrews 12:1-3, 12-13 (NIV)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

In Isaiah 35:3, God urges us to ‘strengthen our weak knees.’ This is not done by lifting weights, but by letting God’s promise of the Kingdom have ‘weight’ or significance in our hearts. The author of Hebrews picks up this concept. He points to the cross, showing that Jesus loved us so much he was willing to face the cross just for the joy of seeing us rescued from sin. And we are surrounded by many witnesses who remind us of this. Our response is to “throw off the weight of sin” (v. 1) and “make level paths” for our feet (v. 13), so that we can fully enjoy the power of God’s salvation. Pray for God to expose the weight of sin in your life, and give you the courage to let go of it.
