Daily Devotions – Strength for Contentment

Philippians 4:12-13  (NIV)
12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

 

This passage is often misunderstood and misused. We often (mis-)use this verse as (false) affirmation that God will bless whatever we are trying to accomplish. But when Paul says, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength,” he is talking about contentment amid suffering and need as he works to spread the Gospel. So, we ask ourselves, is Jesus enough for us? Even when we are in trouble or things do not go the way we planned? Or are we trying to use Jesus to help us “win”. Throughout this journey of life there will be ups and downs, but Jesus is always there walking with us. Let us ask Jesus to strengthen our faith in His presence and give contentment in His love.
