Daily Devotions – Seriously… Rest

Exodus 20:8-11 (NIV)

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

This is one of the famous “Ten Commandments”. They include things like, “You must not murder” or steal or commit adultery. Those are all pretty big and important. But have you ever stopped to think that before God gets to those “big deal” commandments he says, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy?” The command to rest is seemingly more important! Why? Because stealing, lying, committing murder or adultery all come from a broken relationship with God. Worshiping, resting, and glorifying God on the Sabbath is actually an act of faith that fights against sin. We like to fix things and are constantly looking for how to self-improve, but the Sabbath is part of God’s faith improvement plan, where we are reoriented and our focus is shifted back to our Savior who has done all the heavy lifting for us!
