Daily Devotions – Ready to Give an Answer

1 Peter 3:13-18

“Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.”

As we continue to worship God and serve one another—in word and deed, with our hands and with our hearts—we are also called to be ready to explain why we act as we do, why we believe what we believe. These words from 1 Peter give us a clear roadmap when we are asked: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” (1 Peter 3:15b) We’re not asked to explain all the intricacies of our faith or all the details about Christ. We are instructed to explain our hope! We are encouraged to be gentle and respectful. As we share what God means to us, we are called to speak with grace and love. Today, I invite you to consider what you would say if someone asked you about your faith: “What does God mean to you?” Use your own words. Want to try it out on someone?
