Daily Devotions – Meditating on God’s Word

Psalm 1

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

Psalm 119:97-100,148 (NIV)

97 Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. 98 Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies. 99 I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. 100 I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts.

148 My eyes stay open through the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promises.

The Psalms are like the prayer-book or the hymn-book of the Bible. Isn’t it interesting that God wants us to sing and pray about studying and meditating on his Word!  But that makes sense, because with God stirring our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, we will fail to delight in the Scriptures, and we will soon neglect them, much to our own harm. So, when you have trouble perverting in God’s Word, pray about it. And when you find delight in God’s Word, sing about it! See also Colossian 3:16-17.
