Hebrews 4:12-16  (NIV)
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Jesus the Great High Priest 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to flee swords in general.  Anything that has the power to pierce “to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints, and of marrow” (Heb 4:13) is not something I want to approach.  What’s further, the thought that “no creature is hidden from his sight” (Heb 4:13) is not exactly comforting.  Sometimes I do things I don’t want God to know about!  Yet, this scripture reminds us that God’s living and active word speaks to us of a savior who has come near to us so that we may draw near to him.  We are invited into the presence of God because he has come into our presence, created us and redeemed us.  God desires to have us close to him.  Consider what it might mean to be close to God.  Does this bring you comfort?  Today, let us sit in God’s presence and ponder this together.
