Daily Devotions – Laboring for what does not satisfy

1 Samuel 12:2 (ESV)

And now, behold, the king walks before you, and I am old and gray; and behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.

Jeremiah 2:11 (ESV)

11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit.

Hosea 4:10 (ESV)

10 They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall play the whore, but not multiply, because they have forsaken the Lord to cherish

In Isaiah 55:2, God indicts us with a powerful question: “Why do you labor for that which does not satisfy?” This reveals that we spend our money, time, and energy on things which don’t matter. In fact, they usually make things worse. Today we look at three other places where God makes the same accusation. This helps us see that this is a perpetual problem for mankind, and none of us is exempt from this temptation. The key learning is to remember that, when we are unsatisfied with life, when it feels like we are working hard and not getting what we want, it is because we are working for the wrong things! A deep friendship with God is the only thing that can actually satisfy
