Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV)

Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

True life is learning to die. This sounds radical in a world that is constantly telling us to “find your true self” by looking deeper within. But the Apostle Paul tells the Christians in Colossae to look “up”. Up to the cross where Jesus died to forgive the brokenness inside all of us. Up to the heavens where Jesus has risen to defeat death forever. Up to where the Author of Life reigns forever. As we learn to die and our life is hidden in Christ the dark times of life become the places where God reveals Himself more clearly, like on the cross, and the joy-filled moments become glimpses of our future home. Let us praise God in our prayers that our life is hidden and secure in the risen Christ so that we can die to our self-centered selves and ask that our minds be set on the “things that are above”.
