Ruth 4:17-22 (NIV)

17 The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

The Genealogy of David

18 This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron, 19 Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, 20 Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, 21 Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed, 22 Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.

In these final verses of the book of Ruth we see what God has been up to all along. He has been using Ruth, a poor, foreign widow and Boaz, a righteous and faithful farmer, to be the great-grandparents of the greatest king in the history of Israel, King David! The implication is that without them there would be no David. It is God’s exclamation point on the ordinary lives of Ruth and Boaz and they probably didn’t even get to see it! Oftentimes we do not understand the impact our lives make. But when we leave that up to God we can live simple, everyday lives of righteousness, goodness, integrity, devotion and faith that shine God’s light into the world. We can make the lives of our family better and the lives of others around us. Throughout our lives, we should pray and ask God to give us faith that He is at work “behind the scenes” bringing about His plan of salvation, just like with Ruth and Boaz, and that He would give us the strength to live in the hope that Jesus is the ultimate exclamation point to our lives.
