Genesis 2:4-7 (NIV)

4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

In this passage, we are reminded that the power to give life has always been God’s. Adam was created from the “dust” of the earth and this reality is at the same time incredibly frightening and freeing. It frightens us that we are so fragile and so easily returned to the dust, yet God created us from the dust! God delights to create and give life! God delights to be in a relationship with other people and has taken the inanimate stuff of creation and breathed life into it making someone that can love and be loved. What area of your life makes you feel fragile as if you were returning to “dust”? A relationship? Physical health? A job or career? Some things God may not breathe life back into in this earthly life because all things must return to the dust. But God is a life-giver and a Creator and is already beginning His work of new, resurrected, eternal life in us now. Let us find hope and freedom in this good news!
