Luke 1:76-79 (ESV)

76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us[a] from on high 79 to give light to   those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

In his gospel, Luke talks about peace often and this passage is the first time it is mentioned.  Here a priest named Zechariah is prophesying about his son, John (the Baptist). John will guide people “into the way of peace.” That “way,” or “path,” is Jesus. In Acts 14:16 (which Luke also wrote), the apostles Paul and Barnabas said that in the past God “allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways.” Our fundamental peace problem is that we walk in our own ways and not in The Way, that is Christ Jesus. What ways do you walk in that are not the ways of Jesus? Do you seek peace in anything other than Him? Peace in another glass of wine? Peace in a clean house?  A bigger paycheck? In making the traveling or “select” sports team?
