Daily Devotions – A Feast for all peoples

Isaiah 25:6-9 (ESV)

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined. And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. 8 He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

This passage is often read at funerals, especially in churches that use real wine for Holy Communion. It describes heaven as being like a great feast, with well-aged wine and the finest of foods. Verse 8 explains that this feast is a celebration of three things. God has destroyed death forever. God has personally touched us and healed our grief, ‘wiping away our tears’. And God has removed our shame (‘the reproach of the his people’). These things together are what are what it means to be saved. We are rescued from death, and healed of our grief and shame. When Jesus saved the host from humiliation,  by turned water into wine, he was actually giving a preview of this feast, and beginning to fulfill this prophecy. Let the fact that heaven is like a feast encourage you to make every meal sacred!
