I’m so glad that you are taking the time to check out Shepherd of the Hills. We would love for you to join us in worship!
I have been a pastor here since November 2014 and have enjoyed being a part of this congregation. Though I grew up in Illinois (go Cubs!) and went to school in Minnesota, my wife and I arrived at Shepherd of the Hills after living in South Africa helping to start a congregation in a rural area North of Johannesburg. Upon arrival we were met with incredible hospitality and found a congregation hungry to know God and learn more about His word.
Soon after I got here our congregation adopted a new mission statement: We are called to build a community that lives by and for the Gospel.
This means that we believe that God has called each of us as individuals to come together into a particular congregation to join in Christian love, fellowship, and service. Together we strive to allow the Gospel transform our hearts and lives. If you did not catch the irony of that last statement go back and read it again. Striving is a word used to describe active, struggling pursuit of something, but the Gospel is the Good News that Jesus is pursuing US!
It is God’s forgiveness and love that transforms us into the individuals and the community that He wants us to be. Our striving and work is allowing God to work in us.
I am excited to see what God has in store for Shepherd of the Hills as we look to the future being built up in His grace, love and truth as a community firmly rooted in the Good News that Jesus is our salvation, peace and liberation.
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” – 2 Corinthians 13:14
Pastor Matt Shields
Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church believes that the church is the living body of Christ on earth: The Church is God’s family, called by the Holy Spirit, united under the leadership of Jesus, living in fellowship with Him, and doing His work in the world. We invite you to learn more about our Church by browsing through our website, if you have any questions please contact us via email at email@example.com or 262-628-2633.
Our members range from infants to great-grandparents and come from many different backgrounds and experiences. As Jesus said we are to love our neighbors as ourselves, and we would certainly be glad to have you join us whether you come alone, with a friend or as a family.
How do I get there?
Shepherd of the Hills is located just north of the corner of State Highway 175 and Hubertus Road, between the Holy Hill Road and Lannon Road Exits off of Hwy 45/I41 in Richfield, Wisconsin.
Where do I go when I get there?
The worship services are Sunday at 8:30am, 10:30am and Monday at 6:30pm. You will be met by greeters in the lobby who will assist you. If you choose to worship in the morning, we encourage you to come to the Adult Education and Fellowship hour. The Adult Education and Fellowship, as well as Children’s Sunday School is at 9:30am during the school year.
How should I dress?
Generally, people wear “business casual”, although some people dress simply casual. If you like dressing up, that’s fine too. What’s most important is that you come to worship God, and all of us at Shepherd of the Hills want you to feel comfortable and welcome.
At the 8:30 am Sunday service, you will find the music and service format are more traditional.
If you prefer contemporary music you may prefer our Sunday 10:30am or Monday 6:30pm services.
Can my children stay with me in the service?
Yes, if you’d prefer your children to stay with you during any service that is perfectly fine. Please note that we do have Children’s Activity Bags at the Welcome Desk for use during Worship, so please feel free to pick one up on your way into church and return it as you leave. In addition, there are Children’s Bulletins for different age groups available at the Welcome Desk as well. We do encourage you to allow your children (ages 3 – 8) to try out “Children’s Church” designed to reach them at their learning level, which is held simultaneously during our regular sermon. Children arrive and sit with you during the first 15 minutes or so of the service, after which they are dismissed to attend “Children’s Church.” The children then return to you after the sermon for the remainder of the service.
Is there a nursery for our younger children?
Yes. We would encourage you to visit our Nursery Room with your child to allow them to become acquainted with our attendants and begin to feel comfortable prior to the service. We utilize a nursery paging system so that parents can be contacted during the worship service.
Am I welcome to join in the Lord’s Supper/Holy Communion?
Our Lord Jesus is the host of this communion meal. We welcome all baptized Christians to join us. Young children are encouraged to come and receive a blessing.
How can I become a Member of Shepherd of the Hills?
Shepherd of the Hills New Member classes are held 1-2 times a year where participants learn who we are, what our mission and discipleship path are, and your involvement as a new member.
The next new member class is tentatively scheduled in the fall of 2017. If you are interested in attending, please contact Deb Ratzel at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the church office at 262-628-2633. An invitation letter closer to the start of class with more details will be shared upon learning of your interest to be a part of the Shepherd of the Hills family.
